Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound of fresh mushrooms (button or cremini)
- 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter
- 4 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon of dried thyme (or 1 tablespoon of fresh thyme, chopped)
- 1 teaspoon of dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons of fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Clean the mushrooms using a damp paper towel to wipe off any dirt. Avoid rinsing them under water to prevent sogginess. If needed, rinse quickly and dry thoroughly.
- Remove tough stems from the mushrooms. Leave button mushrooms whole, and slice larger cremini mushrooms in half or quarters for even cooking.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat until it starts to bubble.
- Add the minced garlic and stir constantly for about 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
- Sprinkle in the dried thyme, oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir and cook for another minute to release the herb flavors.
- Add the cleaned mushrooms to the skillet, tossing gently to coat them in the garlic butter. Spread them out evenly in the pan.
- Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are tender and golden brown. Avoid overcooking to prevent mushiness.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over the mushrooms and stir gently to combine. The cheese will melt and create a creamy coating.
- Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cheese is fully melted and flavors meld together.
- Remove the skillet from heat and sprinkle chopped fresh parsley over the top for color and freshness.
- Serve warm as a side dish or appetizer, ideally with crusty bread to soak up the garlic butter sauce.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in a skillet with a splash of water or broth.
Notes
- Feel free to adjust the amount of red pepper flakes based on your heat preference.
- For an extra cheesy flavor, add more Parmesan cheese during the cooking process.
