For the red velvet batter:

1 cup all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons cocoa powder

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup buttermilk

1 large egg

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon red food coloring

Optional toppings:

Whipped cream

Fresh raspberries or strawberries

Cream cheese glaze

Chocolate sauce or berry syrup

Powdered sugar


Instructions

Preheat waffle iron according to manufacturer instructions.

In one bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt for the vanilla batter. In another bowl, whisk buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla. Combine wet and dry until just mixed.

In a separate bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt for the red velvet batter. In another bowl, whisk buttermilk, egg, melted butter, vanilla, and food coloring. Combine wet and dry until just mixed.

Lightly grease waffle iron. Pour vanilla batter, then add red velvet batter on top. Use a knife or toothpick to gently swirl into a marble pattern.

Cook until golden brown and crisp. Repeat with remaining batter.

Top with whipped cream, berries, syrup, or desired toppings.

Notes

Do not overmix batters keep them slightly lumpy for fluffier waffles.

Swirl gently to create marbling without blending the batters.

Keep cooked waffles warm in a low oven until ready to serve.
