Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup of packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt (plus extra for sprinkling)
  • 1 sleeve of saltine crackers (about 40 crackers)
  • 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
  2. Once melted, add the packed brown sugar and granulated sugar. Stir continuously until well combined and bubbling.
  3. Allow to boil for 3-4 minutes without stirring until it reaches a golden color. Watch closely to avoid burning.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt (it will bubble up).
  5. Set aside to cool slightly.
  6. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  7. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  8. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the baking sheet.
  9. Pour the slightly cooled caramel sauce evenly over the crackers, spreading it out with a spatula if needed.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes until the caramel bubbles and turns golden.
  11. While baking, melt the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth.
  12. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the baked crackers immediately.
  13. If using, sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts over the chocolate while still warm.
  14. Allow the baking sheet to cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
  15. Sprinkle extra sea salt over the top.
  16. Cut into squares or rectangles with a sharp knife or pizza cutter.
  17. Transfer to a serving platter or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.

Notes
